5 tips for a long-distance mountain bike race

If you’re joining us for the Mondraker Mountain Bike you’ll enjoy these race tips from team rider Levi Gear. Levi finished third at Motatapu in 2024 and recently won the Whaka 50 and the XCO Schools Nationals.

Levi has set himself an exciting goal to beat Anton Cooper’s 2010 time of 1hr 58min 28sec at Motatapu. He says it’s a huge challenge but one he’s eager to take on.

Whether you’re also pushing for a PB, racing for the first time, or simply looking forward to a great day out with your mates, here are Levi’s top tips to help you succeed in the Mondraker Mountain Bike Race at Motatapu.

First up, Levi, what’s your impression of the course?

I can’t wait to return to Motatapu this year – it was easily one of my favourite races of 2024, not only because of the challenging course but also the breathtaking scenery. The Mondraker Mountain Bike race at Motatapu offers a long brutal climb starting at Glendhu Bay, followed by a fast descent, and exhilarating river crossings into Arrowtown. It’s a race that truly tests your endurance and skills.

Race Tips

1. **Hydration**  

Staying hydrated is key to preventing fatigue and dehydration. I recommend drinking an electrolyte-based solution to keep your levels balanced. For a race of this length, I typically aim for about 2 litres of fluid, depending on the weather.

2. **Fuelling Up**  

Keeping your energy levels high throughout the race is crucial. Pack foods that are easy to eat on the go, like energy gels, soft muesli bars, bananas, and some lollies for a quick sugar boost. Personally, for a race this length, I will only take gels.

3. **Pacing Yourself**  

Starting out too fast can lead to early fatigue, so pace yourself! Whether you have a time goal or simply want to finish strong, managing your effort early on will pay off later in the race. Focus on steady progress rather than burning out too soon.

4. **Dressing Smart**  

Check the weather the day before and dress accordingly. If it’s very cold at the start, layers could be essential. If it’s hot, bring extra water to pour over yourself during the race. It’s all about staying comfortable and adjusting to the conditions. Make sure you’ve got all the items on the mandatory gear list including a long-sleeve thermal top and a seam-sealed waterproof jacket.

5. **Knowing How to Use Your Repair Kit**  

Flat tyres or mechanicals can happen, so ensure you’re prepared with CO2 canisters, tyre plugs, and the knowledge of how to use them. While it’s mandatory to carry a tool kit, knowing how to fix a problem on the go can save you from a long, frustrating walk.
