Wānaka is paradise for adventure-seekers like you – but you already know that because you’re here for Motatapu! Hopefully, you’ve got a few days spare before or after race day to really soak up the pristine views and relax in this beautiful alpine setting. Here are our top picks for things to do in Wānaka.
Hit the Trails
Yes, we know that’s exactly why you’re here but, just in case race day isn’t enough for you…
The views from Roy’s Peak are Instagram famous and it’s true, it’s a stunning panorama of Lake Wānaka and the surrounding mountains but it does tend to get a little crowded up there these days. We recommend checking out the quieter Rocky Mountain Track.
For a more leisurely stroll, try the Outlet Track which follows the Clutha River and is perfect for walking or running.
Biking Bliss
Wānaka boasts an array of biking tracks suitable for all skill levels. The Sticky Forest is a favourite among mountain bikers with its network of trails weaving through pine forests. If you prefer a scenic ride with a café and pub at the end, the Lake Hawea to Wānaka Track offers stunning lake views and a moderate challenge. Bike Glendhu’s adventure biking park, which sits right beside the start line for the Motatapu Mountain Bike event, has everything from beginner-friendly trails to challenging downhill courses. The park’s stunning views and well-maintained trails make it a must-visit for biking enthusiasts.
Water Activities
For those who love water sports, Lake Wānaka is your playground. Rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to explore the crystal-clear waters. For an adrenaline rush, try wakeboarding, waterskiing, or jet boating. The lake’s serene beauty also makes it a great spot for a refreshing swim – the perfect therapy for race-weary legs!
Eats and Drinks
After an active day, refuel at one of Wānaka’s many eateries. You’ll find everything here from food trucks to fine dining and it’s all delicious. Wānaka also boasts four craft breweries, eight wineries and a whiskey and gin distillery so beer enthusiasts, wine lovers and spirit aficionados will be spoiled for choice.
Relax and Unwind
Balance your high-energy activities with some well-deserved relaxation at one of the local yoga or pilates studios or soothe your muscles with a luxurious massage treatment at one of the many spas in town.
Cultural and Leisure Activities
Got kids in tow? Head to Puzzling World, a unique attraction with quirky puzzles and illusions and tire them out in the giant outdoor maze. For a more laid-back experience, take a stroll through the local shops and art galleries, or enjoy a film at Cinema Paradiso, a cozy cinema with old sofas and an intermission for freshly baked cookies.
